Zuccotti belong to Castelbuono’s Christmas tradition. These little filled pastries bring a less familiar Sicilian sweet to the table, with almonds, candied pumpkin and cinnamon at their heart.
Bite through the shortcrust pastry and you’ll reach a soft filling of zuccata-candied pumpkin with Sicilian almonds and cinnamon. The crisp pastry and gently spiced centre make a lovely combination.
In 1977, sisters Arcangela and Rosa opened a bakery in Castelbuono with their husbands, Lucio and Vincenzo. What began as a family workshop making bread and biscuits continues in the same Sicilian town, keeping its baking traditions alive.
Put a few on a plate with clementines and walnuts for a relaxed afternoon treat. A cup of black tea goes nicely with the sweet filling and cinnamon.
